Tarja was rescued together with another male hamster and was extremely terrified when she was first found by the rescuers. She constantly screamed when we tried to hold her so she requires really gentle handling whereby using a hideout or container to scoop her and slowly placing her back in her environment would be a great way to handle her. As she was found with one batch of 2 weeks old babies, and another batch of 9 young hamsters, we deduced that she’s the mother hamster whom unfortunately gave birth twice and as she was not separated from the male hamster during the abandonment she was pregnant again.
She gave birth to another 4 hamsters and is now fully recovered and doing well. Because of the trauma she has gone through she is extremely cautious and hates being touched. However, she will always be out once in a while on her two legs and paws up, as her curious nature allows her to venture out and wonder what’s going on.
Tarja requires loads of TLC and building of trust in order for her to be less fearful of others. Patience is highly required in handling her. Fosterer places loads of forage to create a calm and happy place for her as she enjoys burrowing through and biting the leaves and flowers. Wooden items are not recommended as she loves to bite through them, destroying them. Safe chews like whimzees are highly recommended.
