Rescued late in the night with 12 of his brothers and sisters, Biscotti is one tough cookie! With such a tough start, it’s no surprise he’s still so shy. But shy does not a scared hamster make! Cautiously curious, he can be coaxed to come towards you with a treat, and with enough patience his fosterer believes that he’ll learn to trust you.
Biscotti resembles a cute little baby tiger and has everyone absolutely obSESSED with him! But in reality, he’s more like a stripey orange bear. A little Winnie the Pooh. He loves to spend most of his time rotating between his various hideouts for his epic snooze sessions. His fosterer has never seen a hamster yawn so much until Biscotti - it’s absolutely adorable.
At night is when he really comes alive. It’s likely this little bear has a bit of performance anxiety because as soon as he hears someone approaching, he stops in his tracks and waits until he thinks you’re gone to continue his exercise. But at the end of the day, all you need to get into the soft and tender centre of this tough cookie is a bit of patience, love, and a lot of treats!
Requirements:
Cage: Min. 80x50cm
Wheel: Min. 27cm
Bedding:
Oxbow Pure Comfort
Currently using the natural brown colour as I have found in the past that the white and coloured varieties are very dusty.
Aspen Shavings to provide structure for tunnelling mixed into the paper bedding.
Currently using Marukan.
Optional: Shredded tissue paper for a pop of colour!
Currently using IKEA brand coloured paper napkins.
Sanko Bath Sand.
Food:
Currently using Bunny Nature Hamster Dream Expert
Other brands such as Rodipet or Fatpouches are good too!
Enrichment:
At least 3 hideouts
Can be one large nesting area/chamber hideout and 2 smaller ceramic or cardboard hideouts.
Trustie brand from PLC for the smaller ones is a good option.
Please note that he often rotates between hideouts for his nest, and you will need to check every few days how ‘damp’ they are to ensure he doesn’t sleep in his pee for too long!!
Non perishable treats and food hidden in bedding
Bedding should be at least half his height in order for him to do this.
He is not a huge digger so having deep bedding throughout the cage is not a necessity, however he does like having enough bedding to properly stuff his hideouts to nest in.
